Marty Yates Goes Back to Back to Win Rounds 1 and 2

Tie-Down Roping Rd 2

It has been an impressive start to the 2020 NFR for Marty Yates. He has won the first two rounds in Tie-Down Roping with times of 7.1 seconds a 7.2 second run in Round two.

Yates has had an impressive career, qualifying for seven NFRs, but the one thing he is missing is his first Gold Buckle. Before the NFR started it seemed impossible for anyone but Shad Mayfield to win the title, but if things fall Marty’s way in the next eight rounds, he has an outside shot at pulling off the shocking comeback.

The hot start is something Yates knew he needed, “Getting started on the right foot at the NFR, it definitely helps,” Yates said. “You can get started off on the wrong foot and can feel like you can’t get over the hump. To get the two first rounds in the bag, it gives me a lot of confidence going forward. I’m going to keep going at them (the calves) and do my job. I’m not a very conservative roper, I go at them every time and try and make the most of every calf.”
