Bull Riding Icon Don Gay’s Rodeo Cowboy Roots Run Deep

Don Gay’s father, Neal Gay, made sure that his boys grew up the cowboy way, working hard no matter what, some could say they worked like hired hands. When Gay was five, he watched and worked alongside his father and Jim Shoulders as they started the Mesquite Rodeo.

“For me, the greatest thing about being rodeo cowboy is I never had to take off my uniform,” he said.

Although it was a slow start, Gay knew that the bull riding was his event, that was it for him. He would go on to become a household name in the sport and set World Records that have yet to be broken today.
