The year was 2007 when Reno Rosser noticed roughtsock numbers declining in college, high school and at junior rodeos. That was a concern for the stock contractor so alongside Jesse Segura, with Feather River College, Rosser hosted their first ever free roughstock schools.
“So we put on the first free roughstock school in Quincy in 2007 and here we are 16 years later,” Rosser said.
This was their second largest school that they have put on with almost 90 students coming from around the country to get on over 250 head of roughstock over two days.
“It’s been great. We catch the roughstock riders that are coming from Red Bluff and instead of flying home they can to the ranch give back to the sport a little bit and then make their way down to Clovis. It’s been a great success,” he said.
With coaches like Kade Bruno and Zeke Thurston among the 20 coaches that have helped at the school, anybody wanting to learn, learns from the best. The students are encouraged to reach out to their coaches even after the school is complete to continue their schooling.
Rosser says that rodeo is in a great place in California as they continue to sell out performances and students of all ages come to their roughstock school. One thing is for sure, cowboys are cool.
