The Grand Champion Junior Market Steer exhibited by Aven Horn was purchased for a historic $1 million at the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo.

The purchase, made by past President and Chairman Don D. Jordan and his family, broke the previous high of $625,000 set in 2019. Aven Horn received $85,000 for the purchase.

It is the 90th year of the Houston Stock Show and Rodeo and Jordan turns 90 this year. He has been on the Executive Committee since 1986 and his history with the event dates all the way back to 1948, when he caught a calf at the calf scramble.

“The Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo and I were born in the same year, so we’ve spent a lot of birthdays together,” said Jordan.

The Grand Champion wasn’t the only steer sold at a record-breaking mark Saturday either. The Reserve Champion Junior Market Steer was purchased for $675,000. It was exhibited by Tristan Himes and shattered the previous record of $367,000, also set in 2019.
