Shelby Boisjoli-Meged Gets Poetic Win as Calgary Stampede’s First Ever Breakaway Roping Champion

Calgary’s own Shelby Boisjoli-Meged makes history.

The Calgary Stampede added breakaway as an event for the first time ever this year, and it was Calgary’s own Shelby Boisjoli-Meged who took home the title.

Without knowing it would foreshadow the end, Boisjoli-Meged roped a 2.3 in Pool A Round 1 to also be the first to get a breakaway roping go-round win in this arena.

On Showdown Sunday, Boisjoli-Meged backed into the box in the Semifinals and laid down a 2.8-second run to sneak into the Top 3. When the Showdown Round came, Boisjoli-Meged tightened up to do what she does best. It would be a 2.2 that would cement the hometown cowgirl as the first-ever Calgary Stampede Breakaway Roping Champion.

“Before this rodeo, I actually took my Uncle Guy’s stirrups off one of his saddles. He passed away a couple years ago so I wanted to have him with me here. So, this was super special and I feel like he’s here right now,” she said.

Boisjoli-Meged put an exclamation point like no other onto her first-ever Calgary Stampede, and the most iconic bronze of the 2025 rodeo goes home with a Calgary cowgirl.
