Megan Champion is currently No. 1 in the barrel racing at the San Angelo Rodeo and is in that position thanks to a smoking 14.28-second run in the Second Round she made on her mount Smarty.
Champion does not come from a rodeo family and said Smarty had never been a barrel racing horse before she started working with her. She said some older competitors on the California Circuit let her know she had a “once in a lifetime” horse and that if she ever wanted to rodeo full-time, she should hit the road while she can with Smarty.
Champion, who has been rodeoing professionally since 2018, is looking to win San Angelo and make her first NFR in 2021
“Yes, most definitely she is (once in a lifetime),” Champion said. “I love her.”
