At just 20 years old, Shad Mayfield has done more in his roping career than many will ever do. Mayfield is coming off his first, and likely not last, World Title in 2020 and is looking to continue to dominate the Tie-Down Roping World.
Mayfield currently sits in third place in the World Standings and is coming off a win in Redmond, Oregon at the High Desert Stampede.
Shad had never been up to Redmond but is thankful he was able to make it up there.
“That was my first time in Redmond, Oregon. I have not been to Oregon a whole lot rodeoing, but I was glad that they had that rodeo. It was a great rodeo and I am glad I was able to go over there.”
It’s easy to be glad you make it to a rodeo when you end up on top, and that is exactly what Shad did with his 8-second run. Not only did Mayfield win, he did it on the back of a horse he had never ridden before.
“It was a great run, I rode Richard Newton’s horse. He worked really good. I have never rode that horse but only seen Rich ride him at the practice pen at some rodeos. He worked great, I scored really good, had a good calf, and just had to do my part.”
As for what’s next for the 2020 World Champion?
“I am going to try to get to all of the bigger rodeos, I have a good start. I got quite a bit of money won so I am going to stick to trying to go to the bigger rodeos where I have a better chance at them.”
Mayfield has his sights set on Kissimmee for the RAM National Circuit Finals and San Angelo for the San Angelo Rodeo in the coming weeks.
