Inside The Monument, the New Home of Rodeo Rapid City

This weekend, Rodeo Rapid City begins its four-day slate of PRCA action and this year, it has a brand new home.

The Monument is a conglomeration of several venues under one roof, including an ice arena, a convention center that hosts the Black Hills Stock Show and Summit Arena, the home of the rodeo.

Executive Director Craig Baltzer said there are a few things that set Summit Arena apart from the rodeo’s old venue, more space, more ways to watch and more food.

The floor is a lot bigger and there are more seats. This not only makes things easier on the barrel racers, but also gives the venue more entertainment opportunities.

There are options for socializing with tables and seating areas throughout the arena, some of which are free to the public, that can serve as meeting places for groups. Additionally, there are no suites in the traditional sense, instead there are premium level tickets with access to high-end service that allow patrons to socialize with a view of the action.

Lastly, there’s the upgraded food options. The venue has stands for carved meat sandwiches, asian fusion, fried chicken, mac and cheese bowls and steak tips in addition to traditional stadium food like hot dogs or nachos.

Baltzer says he hopes the new arena can help push Rodeo Rapid City to its third consecutive PRCA Large Indoor Rodeo of the Year award.
