We saved the fastest cowboy for last in the Championship Showdown Round of the steer wrestling in Calgary. Will Lummus captured the big win with a 3.6, the fastest run of the entire rodeo.
Lummus knew he had a good steer and being last out, he knew exactly the kind of run he had to lay down and he did just that.
“I’ve got so many people to thank. My wife’s at home and allowing me to do this, my mom and dad and my uncle pushing me to do this and last but definitely not least, my traveling partners. Ty Erickson was winning first right there and he was the first guy to give me a hug, it means a lot. And then Dakota Eldridge is right there with me and the one, honestly, that means the most is Clayton Hass, [he’s] in the states right now going to some rodeos but he sent Benz and Cuatro up her for us and I can’t thank him enough. Cuatro went down but Dirk stepped up and helped us win so I appreciate everybody,” Lummus said.
Rodeo would not be what it is without the comradery that flows through the cowboy and cowgirls that hit the arena dirt.
“I’m a soft-hearted guy but you spend so much time from home and you really need people backing you. Just like those guys being excited for me as if I would’ve missed that steer and Ty would’ve won first, it’s how it should be,” he said.
Lummus tugged the heartstrings as he accepted the $50,000, the iconic Calgary Stampede Bronze and took his place as the new Calgary Stampede Steer Wrestling Champion.
