The rodeo world is grieving the loss of one of its most iconic figures, Roy Cooper, known as the “Super Looper.” Cooper revolutionized the sport and inspired generations of cowboys with his unmatched talent, dedication, and love for the sport.
Country music legend and lifelong friend George Strait shared an emotional tribute, saying,
“I personally lost one of my best friends and all-time heroes yesterday. The world of rodeo lost one of the very best to ever swing a rope. He changed the sport of calf roping, no doubt.” Strait continued, “He loved the Lord. He loved his family as well… You will be missed, my dear friend, but I’ll be there someday to see you again along with all your other buddies.”
Eight-time World Champion Joe Beaver, a close friend, remembered Cooper as the one who set the standard in tie-down roping and left a lasting mark on the sport they both loved.
“When you say, think, or watch tie-down roping, there’s a few names that will always come first—Roy Cooper is the first! He single-handedly changed the sport forever.”
Reflecting on their friendship, Beaver added, “He was one of the dearest friends, and I will forever cherish the memories we made together. We spent many hours together in trucks, planes, and arenas. There will never be another one like him. RIP RC, luv ya baby cakes.”
Roy Cooper’s legacy as a champion, mentor, and friend will live on through the many lives he touched both in and out of the arena.
