Taylor and Shane Hanchey Discuss What It’s Like Competing at Rodeos Together

With breakaway roping being added to more and more rodeos, tie-down roper Shane Hanchey and his wife Taylor have gotten the opportunity to watch each other compete and work together as a team.

One of the first times they were in action together was at the 2021 ProRodeo Tour Finale in Salinas. Taylor was competing in the breakaway roping with a chance to qualify for the NFR and become the first woman to make it in both breakaway and barrel racing. Not only was that on the line, she was also riding one of Shane’s horses that they thought would fit the setup better.

“It wasn’t even worried about me roping in Salinas, I was so worried about her,” Shane said.

Taylor ended up making the Finals and won just enough to snag the 15th spot, something she learned when Shane woke her up in the middle of the night to tell after he had looked at the standings.

Taylor says it’s fun they now get two opportunities to do well at rodeos, but they have different approaches in competition. Shane is more the number-cruncher in the marriage and Taylor would rather not stress about her competition.

“When you have no control over what happens, that’s the most stressful situation,” she said. “Like when I’m in the stands watching him, what am I going to do? There’s literally nothing I can do to help.”
