The Calgary Stampede holds a rich history as rodeo’s most iconic figures have poured their blood, sweat and tears onto the dirt there in Alberta, but one cowgirl in particular shares a story that will stick with the Stampede forever.
Barrel racer Tammy Key-Fischer had the highest of hopes heading into the 2009 Calgary Stampede with the expectations of taking home the title once and for all after claiming Reserve Champion the year prior,. However, just days before Calgary commenced, tragedy struck as her son was involved in a fatal car accident.
Shortly following the loss of her son, Fischer got back on the rodeo road but as she began heading North the cowgirl was met with truck troubles while traveling through Montana.
Fischer continued to persevere as her strength and fortitude shined in the Showdown Round where the cowgirl posted the fastest run of the ten days to win it all.
The $100,000 championship check was used to not only cover Fischer’s truck repairs but allowed her to start a scholarship fund in her late son’s name.
