Shad Mayfield has won several of the biggest rodeos in Texas and on Saturday, he added Rodeo Austin to that list with a 7.4 second run in the winner-take-all Short Round.
“Winning, that’s the best part about (my run),” Mayfield said. “It seems like I haven’t won a rodeo in forever.”
Mayfield’s win was much needed in and out of the arena. At home, he had been dealing with the stress of wildfires in the area. His property was safe, but the fires got within a half mile.
“I’ve had a lot to battle last week with the fires back home and I’m just thankful to get it done here today,” he said. “It was scary.”
Mayfield won nearly $18,000 at Rodeo Austin and moved to No. 2 in the PRCA World Standings. World No. 1 John Douch finished second in Rodeo Austin with a 7.8 in the Finals.
