The Shane Hanchey Invitational started when its namesake was in high school. No one in the rodeo world knew him as a Gold Buckle winner or 12-time NFR qualifier yet, he just wanted more ropings to take place in Louisiana.
Now, 13 years later, the 2021 edition of the event will pay out $6,000 per round and the Average will pay $12,000. There is at least $120,000 total up for grabs and Hanchey says it’s not out of the realm of possibility to see someone win $20,000 this coming weekend at his home in Giddings, Texas.
“To see it blossom, kind of like my career, it was pretty cool,” he said. “I just wanted to have a great roping.”
In the tie-down roping, there are 80 cowboys competing, including 14 of the 15 NFR qualifiers and in breakaway, there are 50 cowgirls, six of whom are 2021 NFR qualifiers. The breakaway will take place on Saturday and the tie-down will be Sunday.
“That’s one thing I pride my roping on,” he said. “If you’ve got $1,500 and you want to rope against Tuf Cooper, Caleb Smidt, Shad Mayfield and prove you belong here, then let’s see it.”
Kincade Henry was last year’s champion.
