Tie-down roper Caleb Smidt couldn’t pass up his opportunity to win $1 million.
Smidt, a two-time World Champion, was offered an exemption to RFD-TV’s The American after a positive COVID-19 test kept him out of the NFR, and the Top 10, in 2020. Rather than accept and advance straight to AT&T Stadium, Smidt decided he was going to compete in the semi-finals for the chance to earn his spot in AT&T Stadium as a qualifier.
“Since I’ve never had the chance to nod my head for $1 million, we’re going to try it out this year,” he said. “It’s dang sure not an easy way, there’s a lot of guys that can rope, it’s going to be tough, but I’m ready for it.”
Had he chosen to accept his exemption he would have not been eligible for the $1 million prize. Smidt has already gotten a spot in the semi-finals.
Barrel racer Dona Kay Rule accepted her exemption.
