Hunter Herrin made an incredible comeback this year, just barely qualifying for the NFR where he then jumped 11 spots in the PRCA World Standings. Even though he qualified in the No. 15 Herrin proved himself to be a serious contender for the gold buckle. In fact, throughout the NFR he jumped 11 spots in the PRCA World Standings, and if one calf hadn’t gotten away from him, he may have very well won it.
Winning Round 5 was an emotional moment for Herrin, who told Amy Wilson that that was the moment he realized he could really do it, still compete with the best.
The 9X NFR qualifier (2006-09, 2011-12, 2014-16) was sidelined at the end of the 2017 season due to a hip injury, but three years and three surgeries later, he was ready to make another run at the world title at his tenth National Finals.
Returning to rodeo in full health this year, Herrin missed out on some big money at the 2020 winter rodeos, but he and his old partner Rambo — the 2014 AQHA | PRCA Tie-Down Roping Horse of the Year whom Herrin rode at the 2014 and 2015 National Finals— hit their stride over Cowboy Christmas.
From his home in Apache, Oklahoma, Hunter Herrin talks to Justin McKee about his hip injuries, what it took to get healthy again, and making his comeback this year with Rambo.
