Most Memorable Moments: Lewis Feild’s First All-Around Title

In 1985, when the National Finals Rodeo made its move to Las Vegas, bareback rider and team roper Lewis Feild won both the Bareback Riding World Championship and the All-Around World Championship, becoming the first roughstock cowboy to do so since Larry Mahan in 1973.

The following year was a repeat for Feild, who won both world titles for a second time, and then in 1987, he took home his third consecutive All-Around title.

In 1992, he was inducted to the ProRodeo Hall of Fame as one of the greatest All-Around cowboys in ProRodeo history.

He once said, “Someday, when rodeo people look back at what I’ve done, I’d like them to say these things: that I rode tough; that I could ride with pain and courage; that I was a fierce competitor in the arena, but a quiet, respectable man outside the gate. I just want to be remembered as a cowboy. That probably says it all.”

Lewis Feild passed away in 2016 at the age of 59 after battling pancreatic cancer, but son Kaycee Feild has followed in his footsteps, with 4 World Champion Bareback Riding titles of his own. Come December, Kaycee is headed back to the NFR to fight for number five and tie his dad’s total.
