In the Johnson Family, Ranching and Rodeo Run Deep

The Johnson Ranch in Casper, Wyoming, has now been home to six generations, making it one of the oldest and best known operations in the Northwest. In fact, it’s one of the first homesteads established in the area.

The youngest generation of Johnsons consists of three boys, sons of 2011 Team Roping World Champion Jhett Johnson, who are all following in their dad’s footsteps. Brothers Kellan and Carson not only work on the ranch but also compete on the ProRodeo Circuit as team roping partners, who currently hold the No. 33 and No. 30 spots in the heading and heeling World Standings respectively.

They’re the sons of Jhett Johnson, a former World Champion, who now serves as the head rodeo coach at Casper College and a dad of three boys following in his footsteps. “I’ve never wanted to be anything other than a cowboy and a rancher,” says Jhett, “and if that’s what you like, Wyoming’s good country for that.”

The Johnsons talk about their ranching legacy, love of rodeo, horse power, and how life changed after Jhett was diagnosed with testicular cancer. Jhett’s sons also note that it isn’t just their dad’s world title that inspire them as athletes, it’s his upstanding character and resulting impact on the sport. “I want people to know two things,” says Jhett, “that I was honest and that i was a true cowboy.”
