Elko Rodeo’s Tribute to Sgt. Ben Jenkins

At the opening ceremony of the Silver State Stampede last week in Elko, Nevada, the rodeo waved the Blue Line Flag to honor one of its own — Elko native Sergeant Ben Jenkins, who was shot and killed in the line of duty this year on March 27.

A man who loved Nevada and loved Elko, Sgt. Jenkins was devoted to serving and protecting his community, and he ultimately gave his life to do just that.

On March 27, Sgt. Jenkins was shot while trying to help a motorist seemingly in need on the side of the highway. As Sgt. Jenkins approached the vehicle, the motorist opened fire and killed him. The shooter then stole Sgt. Jenkins’ uniform and fled the scene in his patrol car.

Luckily the killer was apprehended within hours and taken into custody. And the life that he took will never be forgotten.
