Bracket 4 came to a finish during Saturday’s matinee rodeo in San Antonio.
Bracket 4’s overall high-money earner across events was saddle bronc rider Sterling Crawley, who took first in round one, fourth in round two, and placed second in the final round. On Saturday afternoon, Crawley was just one point behind Hardy Braden, who scored 84 points on Powder River Rodeo’s Look Again with an 83-point ride on Calgary Stampede’s Shoshone Mountain. Second place got him an additional $2,000, and he now advances to the semifinals with a total of $5,250 in prize earnings.
Crawley is hoping to have another chance at the San Antonio Saddle Bronc Champion title, after coming close two years ago but being knocked out of the running due to injury. During the second round of the 2018 Semifinals, he landed wrong when dismounting and broke his collarbone, being sidelined for six weeks. His older brother Jacobs Crawley went on to win the saddle bronc riding that year. “I watched Jacobs win this rodeo and it’s one that everyone wants to win,” Sterling said. “This is one of those rodeos that you look forward to all year long. Even if you don’t win the title, it can sure set you up for the rest of the season. It gets your momentum going. It’s on everyone’s bucket list.”
Another qualifier to watch from Bracket 4 include Shad Mayfield, who finished the 2019 season number 12 in the PRCA World Standings and second in the Tie-Down Roping Rookie of the Year Standings. He is currently first in the 2020 World Standings and is entering the Semifinals with $5,000 in total earnings. Bareback rider Jake Vold is looking strong, winning on Friday with an 85-point ride on Championship Pro Rodeo’s King Thomas and totaling $4,500 overall, as is barrel racer JIll Wilson, who surpassed both Carly Taylor and reigning world champion Hailey Kinsel Lockwood to finish first in the bracket with $4,750.
