For the first time since 1986, the Calgary Stampede had Co-Champions. Bull riders Shane Proctor and Dakota Buttar both went 88.5 points in the Championship Showdown to split the title.
This is Proctor’s second Calgary Championship, his first one came in 2011.
“It’s just been years and years of getting on bulls and going to the highest caliber of rodeos, like Calgary is, and I’ve been put in a lot of pressure situations and I’ve kind of built my way to where I’m able to take advantage in those situations… I’m just blessed to be here 11 years apart from my previous win. There’re not very many bull riders that can say they did that,” Proctor said.
Dakota Buttar has many memories from over the years at the Calgary Stampede and now he can add winning the Championship title to that list.
“I rode steers here in 2006 and it’s been a goal ever since to come back. I’ve only made that four round one other time and that was last year so it was pretty special to come back this year and draw good bulls so I’m excited to be on this stage,” Buttar said.
Each cowboy got on three bulls to secure this win and they will go down in the history books at the Calgary Stampede.
