Leighton Berry Reflects on the Impact of the Resistol Rookie of the Year Race

National Finals Rodeo Qualifier Leighton Berry reflects on his first year as a professional bareback rider in 2019 while competing in the Resistol Rookie Race.

Berry finished at No. 9 in the World Standings for 2020 and competed in his first ever NFR, winning Round 1 and placing in 5 total rounds.

In 2021 Berry won multiple events such as the Texas Circuit Finals and the Waller County Rodeo. However, he later suffered a serious injury and was no longer able to finish the season.

Berry has made his comeback in 2022 and is currently sitting at No. 10 in the World Standings.

Although Berry did win the title for Resistol Rookie of the Year, he has overcome serious obstacles in his career at only 23 years old.

“You only get to do it once. You can make as many NFR’s as you want to, as many average titles, as many gold buckles, you name it. You get the Resistol Rookie one time, it’s a one-time shot,” Berry said on what makes this title so special.
