Jim Svoboda left his mark on professional rodeo and after 66 years as one of the most iconic photographers on the road, he passed away on February 19 at the age of 88.
The Nebraska rancher worked for the USDA for 33 years and was a successful All-Around cowboy who competed in steer wrestling, saddle bronc riding, bareback riding and bull riding. Svoboda received his PRCA Gold Card in 1984 and when an injury forced his retirement from the arena, he found his way back in.
With millions of photos shot and a PRCA Photographer of the Year title under his belt, Svoboda officially retired and left the arena in 2021.
Among his many accomplishments are co-publishing ’50 Years of Nebraska’s Big Rodeo’ book, being the Grand Marshall of Nebraska’s Big Rodeo as well as being an official photographer for multiple entities including Miss Rodeo America, National Little Britches Rodeo Association, National Intercollegiate Finals, Bill Pickett National Finals and the National Finals Rodeo Bronc and Bull Sale.
Svoboda leaves behind his wife Marilyn, their three children, seven grandchildren and three great grandchildren.
At his request, Svoboda will have a private service. Instead of flowers, remembrance memorials can be sent to the family and will be donated to Nebraska’s Big Rodeo in Svoboda’s honor.
