BY BRETT NIERENGARTEN

After riding in the PBR for a vast majority of his career, JB Mauney is back to riding in rodeos and he finished No. 6 in the PRCA World Standings with $112,296 in 2021.

Mauney registered two wins over the summer that paid him more than $15,000. He won about $16,500 at the Pikes Peak or Bust Rodeo by making three bull rides of more than 87 points. He sealed the deal with 87.5 aboard Space Unicorn in the Short Round.

His mid-July win at Pikes Peak helped him go from No. 13 to No. 4 in the World Standings in just three weeks.

In July, Mauney also had a good Cowboy Christmas run. He placed third at the Cody Stampede (Wyoming) and second at the Livingston Roundup (Montana). He also placed in St. Paul (Oregon) to bank around $7,500 from July 1-5.

Mauney’s other big payday came a month prior in Reno, where he won more than $20,000. He was once again 87.5 to win the rodeo, this time it was aboard Sea Smoke.

MAUNEY’S WINNING RIDE

Prior to his win in Reno, Mauney started June by winning four straight rodeos to start the month. In a six-day stretch, he won four rodeos. At all four, he was better than 88 points, including two rides in the 90s. Mauney won more than $8,000 for his string of victories.

Mauney will be well-rested as he had just seven outs in August and September combined. He did, however, close his season in style by riding Classic Equine Bad Memory for 90 points in Fort Madison, Iowa to collect $4,000 on Sept. 11. He lacerated his kidney on the ride, but is expected to be fully healthy for the NFR.

He averaged 85.4 points and had seven rides of 90 or more in 2021. He also won 14 Go-Rounds and rode 52 percent of his bulls.

Mauney won the PBR World Championship in 2013 and 2015 and was Rookie of the Year in 2006.
