Ahead of his concert Saturday night, country music superstar Cody Johnson joined Justin McKee to talk about what he’s been up to over the last two years as his life has continued to change with stardom.
For Johnson, his music is more than just entertainment, it’s a way to remind people that despite our divisions, we’re all still human.
“It kind of started with our single Till You Can’t, it did so well, it did two weeks on the Billboard Charts at No. 1, it’s a multi-platinum single and the message behind was it to live life like it’s not going to last very long,” he said. “And spoiler alert, it doesn’t.”
Johnson has been working on a ton of new music and plans to release a 24-track deluxe album hopefully in November.
“Having new music out is fun, I’ve worked for a year and a half, didn’t really tell anybody, just going to the studio secretly and recording my butt off.”
Despite the massive musical undertaking, Johnson still finds time to get on a horseback and get some rest. And for him, it’s something he has to make a conscious effort to do these days.
“In order to live the lifestyle we live, you have to make time. When I go home, I work my own cattle,” he said. Luckily I’ve got good friends....There’s a lot of people that help me get through it...That’s my out route, there’s no stage, there’s no crowd, there’s no business decisions to be made.”
Johnson is also working on combining his passions for helping people and rodeo by hosting a charity roping event, which will be kick-started with a golf tournament in Las Vegas on Dec. 8.
“We’re going to have a team roping that not only pays out a ton of money for the team ropers, but it’s going to raise a ton of money for charity, for people in need, and we’re not going to take a dime of it.”
