Kade Sonnier is currently No. 19 in the World and now has his work cut out for him if he wants to follow up his rookie season with another NFR berth.

The second-year bareback rider, who finished No. 3 in the World in 2023, will be out until Cowboy Christmas after sustaining an injury to his thumb while getting off Hooey Rocks in Guymon.

“My less than desirable get off resulted in a spiral fracture in my thumb. I’ll be out for the next 8 weeks, but I’ll be back just in time for the greatest time of the year, Cowboy Christmas,” he wrote on Instagram, where he also shared footage of the injury. “In the mean time, I’m appreciating the time I get to spend with my family.”

The good news for Sonnier? That ride was 88.5 points in Guymon, and if everything goes as plan, he will be back to defend his titles in Calgary and Cheyenne.

Sonnier has made $30,390 so far in the 2024 season. Last year, it took $111,688 to make it to Las Vegas in the bareback riding.
