Breakaway roper Tana Johnston secured her first big check of the season after turning in a pair of 2.8-second runs and to win the Back When They Bucked Breakaway Roping.

Johnston’s twin 2.8 runs put her sixth in Round 1 and second in Round 2. An aggregate time of 5.6 seconds landed her in the top spot in the Average where she earned a check for just under $4,000.

Prior to this week, Johnston was unranked in the WPRA Breakaway Roping World Standings, that’s because it was the first and only rodeo she competed in so far in 2023.

In addition to her Average check, Johnston collected over $1,700 in Go-Round earnings bringing her total winnings to $5,418 in Deadwood, South Dakota making her your WPRA Athlete of The Week.
