Wenda Johnson had an impressive trip to the Clovis Rodeo in California. After picking up two Go-Round wins, she came back to finish fourth in the Short Go and it left her No. 1 in the average the Clovis Rodeo champion.
This was Johnson’s first time making the California run and she let her horse, Mac, find his own way to be successful. From a specific warm up plan that builds his confidence to being conscientious of the heat, Johnson and Mac ran straight to the winner’s circle every time.
“His run yesterday was unbelievably fast, like just watching him run from the ropers box to the first, he was stretched out, running really hard, rated in so nice and made that turn on his own, which I was really proud of him. And then he ran home hard… he was feeling good and ran hard for me. I’m just grateful he made three solid runs to be able to capture this title,” she said.
There was no better way to end Clovis Rodeo for Johnson as she added $9,447 to her 2023 season earnings. Going into Clovis, she was the No. 20 ranked barrel racer in the WPRA World Standings. Leaving Clovis as the champion should bump her into the Top 15.
