Trey Holston will miss at least four weeks, but potentially more than six after suffering a back injury getting off Salt River Rodeo’s Tatonka in Prescott.
He was 88 points to win the World’s Oldest Rodeo on July 1, but it came at the cost of breaking two vertebrae.
Holston told ProRodeo.com that he didn’t initially realize he had broken until after trying to ride in Livingston, Montana and Cody, Wyoming.
“I figured I could kind of work it out the next day, and I tried really hard,” he said. “I had a talk with my trainers, and as a group, we decided that it wasn’t going to work. So, I didn’t get on in Livingston, Mont., and the following day in Cody, Wyo. I knew I needed to go to the doctor.”
Holston has made the last two NFRs and finished No. 12 and No. 9 in the World in 2023 and 2022 respectively.
Right now, he is No. 13 in the PRCA World Standings and was trending up at the time of his injury. Since June 5, he had ridden 7-of-9 bulls and won two rodeos.
“I still have a shot to make the Finals,” he told ProRodeo.com. “I just need to make sure I’m giving my body the best chance whenever the time comes to get back on the road.”
