Hunter Herrin made an incredible comeback this year, just barely qualifying for the NFR where he then jumped 11 spots in the PRCA World Standings.

The 9X NFR qualifier (2006-09, 2011-12, 2014-16) was sidelined at the end of the 2017 season due to a hip surgery, which then knocked him out again in May of 2019.

Returning to rodeo in full health this year, Herrin missed out on some big money at the 2020 winter rodeos, but he and his old partner Rambo — the 2014 AQHA | PRCA Tie-Down Roping Horse of the Year whom Herrin rode at the 2014 and 2015 National Finals— hit their stride over Cowboy Christmas.

Winning the World’s Oldest Rodeo in Prescott, the Parker County Sheriff’s Posse Frontier Days, and the PRCA Rodeo in Weatherford, Herrin came away from the July run with more than $10,000 in prize money, bumping him up to No. 19 in the Standings.

In August, Herrin earned another $1,000 at the Guymon Pioneer Days Rodeo after an 8.3-second run.

He finished the regular season at No. 15 and earned the final spot at the NFR.

While not considered a serious gold buckle contender, Herrin seemed determined to make the most of his qualification. In fact, he roped the best he has all year. Not only did Herrin place in six out of the ten rounds at the National Finals, two of them he won, and he placed second in the other four. By the end of the NFR, Herrin had jumped 11 spots in the Standings, and he finished out the season at No. 4 in the world with just under $189K.
