The Cowboy Way of Life is the Only Way of Life That Harold Green Has Ever Known

When he is not in the arena roping, the 84-year-old cowboy can be found watching The Cowboy Channel.

Team roper, Harold Green, has lived a cowboy lifestyle for as long as he can remember. His passion to be a cowboy started very young, and you can find the 84-year-old in the roping pen, still to to this day, or in the house watching The Cowboy Channel.

“I’ve had a good life. I’ve lived it to the fullest. Cowboys has always been my big thing. I’ve always rode horses all my life and cowboyed also and roped a lot and still rope. Matter of fact, I’m going to rope this afternoon. My horse is already saddled,” he laughed and said.

As a young child, Green was raised up poor, but always had a strong desire to rope. His father would never allow him to rope the cattle they owned because they were his money makers.

“I didn’t get to rope as long as I was at home, and [his father] told me that when I got out on my own, I could rope all I wanted to. So, that’s what I did,” he said.

At 18-years-old, Green started team roping. Fast forward a couple of decades and he is still doing his best to hang with the young guns.

Green is an avid fan of The Cowboy Channel, and good friends with the one and only Katy Lucas.

“We love that Cowboy Channel. I’ll tell you, I normally turn it over on The Cowboy Channel at nine o’clock, and it stays on. My wife turns it off when I’m asleep. So, it stays on from nine in the morning till... nine or ten at night,” Green said.

Katy and her husband Jens often visit Green and rope with him and he is still trying to out-rope Katy.

“She is such a great person. We just love her to death. She really ropes good too. She’s one of them that... that I have to be on the ball when she comes over and ropes because she’ll beat me. I try to out-rope her every time she comes over here. But, I try to out-rope everybody that comes over here,” Green said.

Green doesn’t know of anyone, especially around his area, that is an older roper than himself but, that is what he believes keeps him young.

“I guess that’s what keeps me young, keeps me going. I don’t know anything but work and rope. And, I’m getting so old I can’t do much work anymore. I give out,” he said. “Seem like when I get in the roping pen, I can last a little longer, so... I guess I’ll never get tired of roping.”
