Tate Thomas was 1.4 seconds faster than any other tie-down roper in the Cheyenne’s first Quarterfinal on Saturday.
The two-time Georgia High School State Champion was 10 seconds flat to best a trio of multi-time NFR qualifiers. Thomas believed going into the round he had the best calf in the pen.
“I just try to take a deep breathe right before I nod and just let muscle memory take over,” Thomas said. “Just tried not to get ahead of myself and make a practice pen type of run.”
John Douch, Justin Maass and Westyn Hughes are the three other tie-down ropers moving on to Friday and Saturday’s Semifinals in Cheyenne.
