Guymon Pioneer Days: Recap, Highlights and Payouts

BY BRETT NIERENGARTEN @PRORODEOBRETT

The theme of this year’s rodeo in Guymon was ‘Remembering the Best from the Wild, Wild West’ and the action definitely backed up that slogan.

Over three days, Guymon Pioneer Days paid out over $300,000 and saw an arena record fall courtesy of bareback rider Jess Pope.

Pope matched up with Frontier Rodeo’s Gun Fire, the same horse he rode in Round 10 of the 2021 NFR to seal his win in the Average, and was 92 points to best the high score of 90 set in 2005.

In steer wrestling, it was another cowboy who had a big NFR in 2021 taking home the buckle as Tristan Martin was 11.6 seconds on three head thanks to three straight times of either 3.8 or 3.9 seconds.

Veteran team ropers Chad Masters and Cory Petska have both moved into the Top 15 after winning Guymon with a three-head time of 22.1 seconds. The pair has combined for 29 NFR qualifications in their careers.

In tie-down roping, Marty Yates jumped into the Top 5 after placing in all three rounds to win the rodeo and bring in close to $10,000. It was eight-time NFR qualifiers first rodeo win of 2022.

Hailey Kinsel and Sister went back to back in the barrel racing. One year after tying reigning World Champion Jordon Briggs for the No. 1 spot in the rodeo, Kinsel took second in both rounds to win the rodeo outright in 2022. Her time was 34.22 seconds on two.

Lastly, in bull riding, Garrett Smith was 91 points on the rodeo’s final day to get the win and cap off a weekend that won him almost $15,000 between Guymon and the Cactus Jack Xtreme Bulls in Uvalde, Texas.
