Guymon Pioneer Days: Recap, highlights and payouts

BY BRETT NIERENGARTEN

Oklahoma’s richest rodeo wrapped up Sunday in front of another packed house.

The Guymon Pioneer Days paid out a total of $332,000 in the seven days of competition that featured three-header in the timed events and one-header in the roughstock.

In the bareback riding, Caleb Bennett rode Pickett Pro Rodeo’s Freckled Frog for 87 points to edge Orin Larsen, who was 86.5.

In the steer wrestling, it was Dalton Massey who won the aggregate. He placed in only one Go-Round, but was consistent throughout, finishing with a time of 12.2 seconds on three. His fastest run of the weekend was 3.7 seconds.

Nelson Wyatt/Levi Lord shared the lead in the first round with 6.3-second run in the team roping and went on to be 21.7 on three to win the rodeo. They were just two-tenths faster than Clay Tryan/Jake Long.

In saddle bronc riding, it was Wade Sundell making a big move. He entered Guymon No. 30 in the PRCA World Standings and rode for 89 points to collect more than $3,600.

Shane Hanchey got the win, and perhaps more importantly, re-took the No. 1 spot in the world in the tie-down roping. Hanchey jumped Tuf Cooper, who had jumped him last week.

In the barrel racing, it was reigning World Champion Hailey Kinsel getting it done on her famous palomino Sister. She and Jordon Briggs tied for the top spot with a time of 34.65 on two.

And finally, Laramie Mosely was the only bull rider over 90 as he earned 91 points on Frontier Rodeo’s County Jail to earn more than $4,500.
