San Angelo Rodeo: Highlights, recap and payouts

BY BRETT NIERENGARTEN

It was a glorious three weeks of rodeo in front of a packed house every night in San Angelo, Texas.

The city that takes pride in their support of roping was treated to some top-notch performances with three-time tie-down roping World Champion Tuf Cooper taking home the title and more than $20,000.

“It’s a blessing to be here and compete in front of these awesome fans,” Cooper said. “I’m so excited I can’t even talk.......Success is a result of hard work, we’ve been working really hard. My new horse is working great, and just so cool to do in front of our second home.”

In the team roping, it was Clay Tryan and Jake Long, who have 28 combined NFR qualifications, coming in first place by a half-second with an aggregate time of 12.8 seconds on three.

The roughstock were events were headlined by Trey Benton III’s 2-for-2 performance in the bull riding as the six-time NFR qualifier and 2017 Reserve World Champion looks to make his return to rodeo’s biggest stage in December. This marked Benton III’s third win at San Angelo in his career and this time, he banked close to $15,000.

“My whole game plan today (in the Finals) was keep moving, keep my feet moving, ride him for 10 and hope for eight,” he said. “It’s always high intensity here. You know I love it here, and it seemed out to work out good for me, paid me well.”
