J.R. Stratford discusses record-breaking bull ride in Rapid City

Kansas cowboy J.R. Stratford rode New Frontier Rodeo’s High Expectations for 93.5 points to win Rodeo Rapid City. The ride was an arena record.

Stratford, who is only 18, has rode bulls at just four PRCA rodeos in his life.

“He’s a real fast and electric bull, good built, good thick back. I was real excited, he stood like a statue on the chutes which kinda made me nervous almost,” he said. “I didn’t expect to hear that big of a score but I sure tossed my hat when they announced it.”

Stratford won more than $4,000 for his first place finish. It was an impressive bull riding in Rapid City as the cowboys needed to be marked 85.5 points or better to get paid. Overall, 15 men rode for more than 80 points over three days of competition.
