Talking Stockyards Shootout with Smith Pro Rodeo’s Cody Kidd

Cody Kidd of Stace Smith Pro Rodeo joins Western Sports Round-Up to talk about this week’s Stockyards Shootout, put together as a one-time event to keep the 2021 rodeo momentum going.

Taking place Thursday - Sunday at the historic Cowtown Coliseum in the Fort Worth Stockyards, the Shootout was organized to give cowboys outside of the top 45 finishers in the 2020 World Standings (and outside the top 5 in 2021 Standings) a chance to compete for big money in San Antonio this year.

“PRCA really came through and said, We want to create an event to make sure somebody can go rodeo, and you know, 2020 ended up where there were a bunch of guys who missed it by a couple bucks, a couple hundred dollars. ... These contestants are going to go as much as they can go while we can still rodeo, and I hope we get to rodeo, you know. That’s our job to do, and we hope to put on a great event here.”

It will be a showcase of sorts, featuring some of the best new and up-and-coming talent in rodeo.

“This is kind of the old average Joe scenario,” says Kidd. “You want to get a guy who hasn’t already qualified to be able to come in here and say ‘Hey look, I’ve got a chance and I can ride just like the other guys.’”

The Stockyards Shootout will air live on The Cowboy Channel and Cowboy Channel+ app Jan. 21 - 24 at 8:30 PM ET.
