The 2020 Classic Events Championship in Guymon

At Oklahoma’s largest and oldest rodeo, the festivities kick off each year with a unique competition that celebrates cowboy culture and rodeo’s roots.

The Classic Events Championship challenges cowboys to compete in both steer roping and saddle bronc riding, “the two oldest events known to be rodeo,” says event coordinator Rick Furnish.

Each competitor has to not only rope two steers but also ride two broncs — one being a colt and one a proven horse.

Better still, all proceeds from the event are donated each year to a chosen charity, this year going to help a three-year-old named Logan Patterson who is fighting leukemia.

Janie Johnson talks to founder Rick Furnish about the Classic Events Championship, as well as Wyatt Casper and Preston Burr, who split the win this year — and then leg wrestled to see who would take home the prize buckle.
