San Antonio Stock Show and Rodeo: Semifinals 1

SASSR Semis1_1280

The first of two sets of Semifinals in San Antonio has arrived and it brings with it some of rodeo’s finest. It will be battle of young guns in the bareback riding while tie-down brings us rookies and barrel racing is a pool of sorrels and an iconic palomino. Take a look at who you can watch for.

BAREBACK RIDING

Texas’ own Chad Rutherford has drawn one of Calgary’s standout horses, Zulu Warrior. The two met once before at Rodeo Houston where they matched up to be 85 and earlier in San Antonio, Taylor Broussard rodeo the horse for 87. Another horse that Broussard drew earlier this week was Cervi Championship’s Ain’t No Angel who rookie Keenan Hayes will climb aboard tonight.

STEER WRESTLING

Kyle Irwin and Stockton Graves are among the ten steer wrestlers in this set. Both veteran bull doggers know what it takes to move on in San Antonio and while Irwin has never won San Antonio, Graves has. There’s an Australian bull dogger in the mix as well, Travis Munro, who is currently sitting No. 11 in the World.

TEAM ROPING

Brand new team Nelson Wyatt and Justin Davis put on a show in their bracket winning two out of three rounds and placing in the third. The duo’s fastest time was a 3.6 in Round 2 and it is safe to say they will be looking to make that run again.

SADDLE BRONC RIDING

Damian Brennan is another cowboy with an outstanding horse of Calgary’s, Xena Warrior. Stetson Wright rode this horse for 90.5 points in Fort Worth while Ben Anderson was 82 in San Antonio. Wright has drawn Cervi Championship’s Blood Angel, a horse that he will have some insight on from his brother, Rusty, after Rusty rode the horse for 85 points at Rodeo Houston last year.

TIE-DOWN ROPING

Rookie Joel Harris is quickly becoming a fan favorite. The calf roper is currently No. 8 in the world and No. 2 in the Resistol Rookie Standings after a standout performance during Bracket 1. Harris won two of three rounds and placed second in the third. Also in this set are World Champions Haven Meged and Shad Mayfield, meaning Harris has his work cutout for him.

The fastest time that either lady has roped inside AT&T Center this year is a 2.1 while Shelby Boisjoli roped a 1.8 and is also out in this set.

BARREL RACING

Jackie Ganter has been on fire lately. San Antonio might have been her little sorrel horse Sailor’s first rodeo but you would not know it. The duo not only dominated Bracket 1 but stayed as consistent as it gets, stopping the clock at 13.95 seconds in two rounds.

All eyes will be on JB Mauney when it is time for bull riding. After making a 90-point ride to win Round 1 of Bracket 2, Mauney has drawn Championship Pro Rodeo’s Oklahoma Smoke Show. This bull has two qualified rides on him this season and Mauney could make it three.
