It was a record-setting weekend for Dean Thompson, who won the Guymon Pioneer Days Rodeo with a 92.5-point ride.
Thompson was matched up with Frontier Rodeo’s Gun Fire and took full advantage as he would beat out Donny Proffit who placed second with an 88-point ride.
The ride would set a new arena record, breaking the mark of 92 set by Jess Pope on the same horse one year ago. The win earned Thompson over $3,500 and secured him The Cowboy Channel’s Rookie of the Week.
The win pushed Thompson’s season earnings over the $40,000 mark and jumped him to No. 9 in the PRCA World Standings. Thompson also moved into third place in the Resistol Rookie Standings behind Keenan Hayes and Kade Sonnier.
The 92.5-point ride was the first 90-pointer of Thompson’s career, but certainly will not be his last.
