Riggin Smith Wins Saddle Bronc Resistol Rookie of the Year

Riggin Smith’s 2020 season was full of ups and downs, but it will end on a high as he won the Saddle Bronc Riding Resistol Rookie of the Year Award. Smith won the award by more than $4,500 after earning $27,164.

Smith tore his ACL and PCL in August and at the time had a lead of more than $10,000 over the closest rookie.

Smith’s 2020 season saw him top the leaderboard five times, including a win at the RAM Great Lakes Circuit Finals Rodeo to earn $9,894.

Smith’s most impressive ride came on the back of The Cervi Brothers’ Womanizer, the 2019 Saddle Bronc Riding Horse of the Year. Smith won the Sikeston, Missouri Jaycee Bootheel Rodeo with an 88.5 point ride on Womanizer.

Smith also found wins in Des Moines, Iowa at The Cinch World’s Toughest Rodeo, The Silver State Stampede in Elko, Nevada, and at the Black Hills Roundup in Belle Fourche, South Dakota where an 88.5 point ride won the rodeo.

In 2020 Smith wound up outside of the top-15 and was not able to make a run at the NFR due to injury, but now, his sights are set on a 2021 NFR qualification.
