As the 2026 PRCA season passes its halfway mark, attention is beginning to shift toward the year-end standings and the athletes making their mark along the way. While competitors and fans closely watch the world title races, the Resistol Rookie of the Year standings — one of rodeo’s oldest and most prestigious honors — are also beginning to take shape.

Only athletes competing in their first year of PRCA card ownership are eligible for the title, making it a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. Many of the sport’s greatest champions first made their names as rookies, learning to navigate the rodeo road while earning Rookie of the Year honors before going on to become world champions and record holders.

The title reflects more than athletic talent. It also highlights an athlete’s ability to endure the demands of a long PRCA season, balancing travel schedules, rodeo strategy and key horse and equipment decisions along the way.

With the race now fully underway, several athletes are making headlines in both the rookie standings and the world standings. Here are a few of the top storylines to watch ahead of the summer run.

Nineteen-year-old roughstock rider Braxton Whitesell currently leads the Resistol Rookie All-Around Cowboy race by more than $19,000, earning $71,207 so far this season. The Cajun cowboy competes in both saddle bronc riding and bull riding and currently sits ninth in the PRCA world standings, positioning himself for a run at multiple Rookie of the Year titles and his first National Finals Rodeo qualification.

Similar to last year’s dramatic bull riding rookie race — where three rookies qualified for their first NFR and battled for the title under the bright lights of Las Vegas — the 2026 season has already produced several standout rookie contenders ranked firmly inside the world’s top 15.

Following a recent win at the Durant Pro Rodeo, Noah Lee of Mineral Wells, Texas, currently leads the bull riding rookie race with $105,742 earned this season while sitting third in the world standings. The Texas cowboy has quickly emerged as both a Rookie of the Year contender and a legitimate world title threat. Only two rookie bull riders have ever won a PRCA world title — Bill Kornell in 1963 and Sage Kimzey in 2014. He would also be the youngest to take home this honor.

Close behind him is Wyoming cowboy Hayden Welsh, who has earned $99,359 and currently ranks fifth in the world standings. PBR standout John Crimber also remains firmly in contention as the rookie race intensifies heading into the summer months.

In the steer wrestling, Colin Fox strengthened his lead in the Resistol Rookie race with a recent payday at the Music City Rodeo. Fox has earned $48,160 this season and currently sits inside the top 15 of the PRCA world standings as the summer run approaches.

As the season continues, so will the Rookie of the Year battles. With several rookies already positioned inside the world standings’ top 15, many are also chasing their first NFR qualification during their inaugural season of PRCA competition.

All eyes will remain on this talented rookie class as they embark on their first official summer run and Cowboy Christmas stretch.
