In 1898, Eric and Albin Swenson purchased the 79,000-acre Scab 8 Ranch in the communal corners of four Texas counties, King, Cottle, Motley and Dickens. It was then renamed the Tongue River Ranch because it was on the Tongue River.

Current owner Millard Morris purchased the 89,00-acre Tongue River in 1997 and added the 30,000-acre Big Baldy New Mexico Division in 2017.

Focusing on developing an outstanding horse program, manager T.J. Roberts has concentrated on raising well-built animals that are highly intelligent and great athletes.

Because of this effort, the Tongue River Ranch Quarter Horses have captured nine WRCA Champion and Reserve Champions at the RHAA finals in Abilene, Texas. Furthermore, the ranch was been awarded multiple Top Horse Awards in the three of the largest most recognized Ranch Rodeos in Texas; the Best of the West Ranch Rodeo, the Texas Ranch Roundup and the Western Heritage Classic.
