An arena record and a big win in Salt Lake City earned steer wrestler Dirk Tavenner the honor of Pyranha Timed Event Athlete of the Week.
The bulldogger who has moved up at more than 40 spots since the beginning of July showed no signs of slowing down this weekend when he was 3.0 in the Long Round and 3.5 in the Short Round to take Gold at the Days of ’47 Rodeo and add another $10,000 to his season earnings.
The 3.0-second run matches the fastest seen in the steer wrestling this season.
“It’s been a blur, we start at the bottom and work our way to the top,” Tavenner said. “When things are going good, it’s just easy, right?”
Tavenner was outside of the Top 50 to begin Cowboy Christmas but then pulled in more than $10,000 from both the Greeley Stampede and St. Paul Rodeo over the 4th of July. He was also the NFR Open Champion on July 15.
Add Salt Lake City to the mix, and Tavenner has made more than $55,000 toward the PRCA Steer Wrestling World Standings in July.
