The steer wrestling has had a front-runner all season long in Dalton Massey and he is still holding that No. 1 position with Jesse Brown and Tyler Waguespack on his heels.
With a consistent Top 5, the remaining 10 that make up the Top 15 have seen some movers and shakers this summer including Dirk Tavenner after success in Salk Lake City, Utah and J.D. Struxness who has stayed steady throughout the 2023 regular season.
As we close in on the final month of competition in professional rodeo, the steer wrestlers are pushing hard for their spot in the Top 15.
No. 7 Dakota Eldridge, $93,989
Eldridge pulled checks at three different rodeos that gave him a leg up to the No. 7 spot. It started at the Lynden PRCA Rodeo (Washington) when he stopped the clock at 4.9 seconds to finish third. He also got himself a Go-Round win at the Canby Rodeo (Oregon) with a 3.4-second run before placing in both the Finals and the Aggregate at another Playoff Series event, the Caldwell Night Rodeo (Idaho). Combining these paydays and Eldridge added more than $7,000 to his earnings.
No. 14 Nick Guy, $70,085
The seven-time National Finals Rodeo qualifier is riding the bubble this season and after last week, he is one rung higher on the ladder. After making a 4.1-second run, Guy found himself finishing second in Go-Round No. 2 of the Caldwell Night Rodeo before his second payday of the week came in Moses Lake, Washington. There, he would be a 4.5 to get a piece of it and continue to add to his earnings in hopes of climbing even higher in the standings.
No. 16 Olin Hannum, $65,222
With the goal of returning to the Thomas & Mack for the first time since 2017, Hannum has had a lead foot down on the summer run, however, the second week of August did not add much to his 2023 season earnings. Just enough came in from his fourth-place finish in Round 1 of the Caldwell Night Rodeo after his 4.3-second run to bump him high enough in the standings to now sit one hole outside of the Top 15 in the World. He is missing it by $3,000 and there is still big paydays left.
