No. 15 Barrel Racer Kelly Allen Talks Mental Game and Bubble Strategy on Western Sports Round-Up

Barrel racer Kelly Allen’s 2023 season has been different from past seasons but in a good way.

Her horses, JJ and Cinco, have thrived all season long. Allen has consistently picked up checks on both horses no matter the set up.

“Both of them have done really well for me this year. Cinco’s done well for me inside, JJ’s done great outside,” she said.

Another difference has been money across the board at WPRA events that have a huge number of entries. The paydays Allen has had have helped her stay inside the Top 15 for most of the season.

Looking into the final month of the season, there are multiple factors going into Allen’s strategy including rodeo count, the NFR Playoff Series points and more.

“I do talk to a lot of different people, a lot of girls that have been on the bubble, that have made the NFR and they kind of just tell me ‘you’ve got to relax and have fun’ and so I’m really trying to enjoy it,” Allen said.

Allen currently sits in the No. 15 hole with just over $1,000 between her and No. 16 with people like Ivy Saebens and Jordon Briggs telling her to just keep going. For Allen, she is having fun with the horses that have helped her season be what it is.
