NIRA Commissioner Talks College Rodeo and Coronavirus

During the height of the college rodeo season, 12 regional rodeos have been canceled so far, at the mandate of universities and local governments.

National Intercollegiate Rodeo Association Commissioner Roger Walters talks to Steve Kenyon and Amy Wilson about the status of college rodeos across the country and how the various cancellations will affect not only the finals but also individual college rodeo programs.

While Walters recognizes that many students may not get their allotted 10 chances to earn a spot in the finals this year due to cancellations, he remains optimistic that the season will get back on track.

“What we want to do is do what each individual locale feels is best for their students through their universities and school administrators,” Walters says. "... Our college finals are not til June the 14th through the 20th in Casper, and so, with that taking place, we’ve got over a 90-day window to, as my grandmother would say, scrub the floor and throw the water out the door. ... I think we are going to scrub the floor and throw the water out, and things will settle and we will go on.”
