Mike Mathis on what it meant to be honored by the Dixie National Rodeo

Mike Mathis has been the voice of the Dixie National Rodeo in Jackson, Mississippi for 25 years.

At the luncheon for the rodeo, Mathis received a plaque from the Mississippi Commissioner of Agriculture and Commerce Andy Gipson that marked his quarter-century announcing the rodeo.

“It goes by when it’s fun and this always is,” he said.

Mathis never intended to be a rodeo announcer. After his time on the rodeo team at Stephen F. Austin, he began working in banking and announced some amateur rodeo.

From there, he says, he just got lucky by being in the right place in the right time.

Now, he’s been a part of ProRodeo for the last 35 years.

You can watch the Dixie National Rodeo live on the PRCA on The Cowboy Channel+ App from Feb. 11-17.
