A true Texas cowgirl, Janie Johnson has deep roots in the western lifestyle — which is just one reason why she makes the perfect addition to The Cowboy Channel’s team of rodeo journalists and television hosts.
Janie’s dad, Clint Johnson, is a 4X World Champion Saddle Bronc Rider and her mom, Mindy, competes in the National Cutting Horse Association. Her great-grandfather, Benny Binion played a huge role in the Wrangler National Finals moving to Las Vegas. Janie grew up in professional rodeo in every way. Following in her parent’s footsteps, Janie has competed in multiple rodeo events from a young age, rodeoing while earning her degree at the University of Texas with high honors in Radio/TV/Film. While Janie continues to barrel race as a professional cardholder in the Women’s Professional Rodeo Association and enjoys working on her family’s cattle ranch in Canyon, Texas, she’s also made a career for herself in TV.
Over the past seven years, Janie has worked with some of the best in the industry. She started as an associate producer for the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo, where she was able to learn under Jeff Medders, the President of The Cowboy Channel. With his company, Geronimo Productions, she covered National Junior High and High School Rodeo Association events and served as a reporter for the WNFR Pre-show. From there, she has served as a sideline reporter for the X-treme Broncs Finale on CBS Sports, the WCRA Semi-Finals, the Cinch Timed Event Championship, the National Barrel Horse World Championships, and more than 58 episodes of the PBR Ride to Glory with Anthony Lucia and Colby Yates.
Since joining The Cowboy Channel team, Janie is now a host of the daily Western Sports Round-Up studio show, she travels as a field reporter and host for PRCA events and conducts interviews and commentary at major events such as RFDTV’s The American, Cheyenne Frontier Days, The Pendleton Roundup, and the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo.
“Joining the Cowboy Channel has been the biggest adventure of my career so far,” she says. “The opportunity to talk about rodeo and its inspiring athletes every day is something that I never thought would be possible. As a fan, it’s so exciting to see our sport get the coverage it deserves, but to be a part of it from a TV perspective is truly a dream come true.”
