The Guymon Pioneer Days Rodeo was the only Playoff Series Rodeo over the weekend and including breakaway roping, it paid out about $250,000.
Among those who impressed were bareback rider Dean Thompson, saddle bronc rider Tanner Butner, tie-down roper Ty Harris and barrel racer Summer Kosel.
The rookie Thompson dazzled on Frontier Rodeo’s Gun Fire for an arena record 92.5 points. It was the second straight season the famous Frontier horse delivered a cowboy a big score and a win as Jess Pope was 92 on her to win the rodeo last year. With the win, Thompson is now one of three rookies in the Top 10 of the PRCA Bareback Riding World Standings.
The big scores didn’t stop there, though. Butner went 90 for the second time this season to pick up his first rodeo win of the 2023 season. He is No. 7 in the world after a payday of close to $40,000.
In tie-down roping, Ty Harris was rock solid on his three runs with no times slower than 9.3 seconds. He won the Average by more than a second and has now risen 31 spots, up to No. 14, in the World Standings over the last two weeks.
There were only two rounds in the barrel racing and Summer Kosel won the first won and finished third in the second to win the Average by more than three tenths. Her two times both ranked in the Top 5 for the entire rodeo.
Other winners were Mason Couch in steer wrestling (13.1 seconds on three), Derrick Begay/Colter Todd in team roping (21.9 seconds on three), Junior Souza in bull riding (88 points) and Sierra Heirnert in breakaway roping (4.6 seconds on two).
